Get excited about the Octoberfest 4v4 Tournament! This is one of many tournament opportunities that are provided by CODL for all of our teams. This one will be extra spooky with a Octoberfest theme! Check out the spooktacular details below!

WHEN: Sunday, October 30th (date change from schedule)
WHERE: Clovis East High School
COST: Free to Freedom Teams
WHO: All age groups can participate
REQUIRED?: Nope, this event is completely optional and is for SPOOKY FUN!

DETAILS: Within your current teams, you can forms smaller teams from 4-7 players. Each team gets to create their own SPOOKY team name. Also, teams can come up with new creative team uniforms (zombies, clowns, super heroes, sponge bob etc). HAVE FUN WITH IT! Shin guards and cleats are still required. Be as spooky and funny as you want to be. Remember teams must dress alike. Awards will be given to the most creative team costumes. Masks are NOT allowed.

REGISTRATION: Teams must complete the application and email by October 15th. Late registration will not be accepted.

I hope your teams choose to participate in this event, its going to be a lot of FUN! Please see attached registration flyer for more information! Questions, let me know.

Coaches' Jamboree - Save the Date

Hello Freedom Soccer Club Coaches and Coach's Assistants,

Thank you all for your support and interest in coaching this year with the Freedom Soccer Club. It was great talking to those whom I saw at the Jamborees and we appreciate your participation. I look forward to meeting those of you who couldn't make it to the Jamborees, or if you have recently decided to help out this year, or possibly in the future.

To continue getting this season off with a bang, we will be holding a Coaches' Jamboree, Thursday, August 11, 6-7:30 p.m. Please let me, Kathleen Szopa, know if you will be attending.

This event will prove to be a hugely beneficial camaraderie builder, technical training and drill-idea builder, along with age-appropriate dialogue to add to your coaching skills for all age groups. Experienced coaches are encouraged to attend to help inspire newer coaches with their experiences. Assistant Coaches are encouraged to attend to work with your team coaches and to open communication between each other. If you are a new coach or assistant coach, not familiar with the technical aspect of ball handling or just need a refresher, this event will teach a detailed look at why we do what we do for ball control and better ball manipulation. Even if you have an interest to coach in the future, please feel free to join us. Odyssey coaches will be available for any further questions about the league or coaching, as well.

I am looking forward to this coaches' training event and to help prepare you for any questions your players may have for you, and for a greater understanding of the game and coaching perspective.

I expect everyone will have learned a little something before the end of it.

So, come out, ready to move a little (water is highly recommended), and please bring a ball and notepad with you.

Now that Jamboree has passed, we hope that everyone had a GREAT time! We were thrilled with our turnout and heard lots of great feedback from parents and from players! THANK YOU!

So, the board is currently building rosters and confirming coaching commitments... and building the teams in the new computer system (which currently [Friday 2:15 am] is not cooperating- will call tech support in the morning!) Once this is completed (before the end of the weekend or early next week) Coaches will be sent their rosters and they'll begin contacting their teams.

Coaches will set their practice schedules- based primarily on their availability and in most cases with input from parents. If you've not heard from your coach by Tuesday August 16th, please contact the registrar. Some coaches and players are out on vacation still.

U6 teams will be formed after the first week of school. The coaching director will be contacting U6 families with dates and times for "Group Practices" either Thursday the 11th or Friday the 12th, at which time she will discuss with the parents the U6 season and how it significantly differs from the older age groups, while the kids play soccer games/drills/activities.

Greetings Freedom Soccer Families!

We are setting up another "Cleat Exchange" this year. If you have soccer cleats from previous seasons that your kids have outgrown but not worn out, please bring them to the registrar's house at 2633 Applegate Avenue (neighborhood behind Freedom) and leave them in an orderly fashion on the front porch. If there is a pair in a size that you need, please feel free to swap them out.

THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF PEOPLE BRING IN OLD CLEATS to build up the stock! If you turn in a pair and there is not a suitable replacement pair available, please leave a note in the soccer bin with your name, size needed and contact info- and if I see a pair that works for you turned in, I'll contact you. There are no guarantees that everyone who turns in cleats will get cleats, but at least we're recycling, right?

If you have cleats to contribute but cannot get them here, please email and it may be possible to have someone pick them up from you.

Once You've Registered- What to Expect Next

Thank you for registering with Freedom Soccer Club! Here's what to expect this season:

Late Registration is open until July 31st, and after that players will be accepted as space is available on teams.

Pre-Season Jamboree is August 3rd for girls and August 4th for boys at Freedom Elementary. 6:00-8:00 both nights. All players should attend, prepared to play in soccer cleats, shin guards and bring their own soccer ball. U6 & U8 players use size 3 ball, U10 & U12 use size 4 ball.

Immediately after the boys Jamboree on August 4th, the board will meet and build teams. Coaches will be given their rosters and may begin practicing the following week of August 8th. Coaches will sign up for assigned practice fields and times to alleviate overcrowding and field hogging.

Coaches may begin practicing the week of August 8th. Coaches will contact players with schedules once they receive their rosters.

Games should begin on Saturdays the weekend of Sept. 10th, and continue until the weekend before Thanksgiving.. with a break the weekend of the CUSD Football Carnival. (*Update- Football Carnival is Sept. 10th, soccer season will begin the 17th. )

In preparation for the 2011 Fall Soccer Season, our Board has been working diligently on improving our Club. As we have discussed in the past, we try very hard to offer the best experience for our players and families. Unfortunately, some of the issues/problems from past seasons are out of our control at the club level and stem from CJSL league policies and procedures.

With that said, our Board is looking into registering Freedom Soccer Club with US Club Soccer’s new recreational league, now available in Clovis. Several of our board members have attended informational meetings to learn about this new option. At our meeting Tuesday, February 15th, we will report our findings and ask for player/family feedback prior to our club deciding to stay with CYSA (via CJSL) or transition to US Club Soccer.

CJSL's goal was to have the schedules out by Wednesday evening late- but I have heard rumors that they are having trouble deciphering some of the game cards from the U8 games and therefore U8 schedules may be delayed.... the person who I obtained information from said it could be as late as Friday at midnight-- but I think (and hope!) he was being sarcastic.

U10 schedules are expected to be posted late this evening... near 10pm.

As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of youngsters.

Through your encouragement and good example, you can help all the boys and girls learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. In AYSO, CYSA, CJSL, & Freedom Soccer young people learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat - all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun.

Support Your Child
Supporting your child by giving encouragement and showing interest in their team is very important.

Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory - that way your child will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game!

Always Be Positive
Parents serve as role models for their children. Be aware of this fact and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your child's team as well as good plays by the opposing team.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports.

Remember: Your Child Wants To Have Fun
Remember that your child is the one playing soccer, not you. It's very important to let children establish their own goals - to play the game for themselves. Take care not to impose your own standards and goals on them.

Don't put too heavy a burden on your child to win games. Surveys reveal that 72% of children would rather play for a losing team than ride the bench for a winning team.

Children play for the fun of playing.

Reinforce Positive Behavior
Positive reinforcement is the best way to help your child achieve their goals and overcome their natural fear of failure. Nobody likes to make mistakes. If your child does make one, remember it's all part of learning, so encourage your child's efforts and point out the good things your child accomplished.

Don't Be A Sideline Coach Or Referee
AYSO, CYSA, CJSL, & Freedom Soccer coaches and referees are usually parents just like you. They volunteer their time to help make your child's soccer experience a positive one. They need your support, too.

That means refrain from coaching or refereeing from the sidelines. In a volunteer organization like AYSO, CYSA, CJSL, & Freedom Soccer there's always an opportunity to take your interest in coaching or refereeing to the next level and become one yourself!

Season Update

Teams are formed and players are practicing..... everyone should know who their coach is and when practices are. If you have not yet heard from your coach please call 354-0989 and let us know. Freedom Soccer Club has formed 27 teams with nearly 300 players and turned over those teams to Clovis Junior Soccer League (CJSL) who will create the schedules for all of the Clovis schools. This is an intensive process, calculating the number of teams, which locations are hosting fields, and how many fields are available for each age group.

Game Days will be Saturdays. In the past games start as early as 8am and as late as 3pm. Game times will change each week, but teams should be at the same field each week.

U6 teams will have their first game 9/25 and play for 6 weeks. In the past all of the U6 teams have played at TK. There will be one weekend where all of the U6 teams will have the opportunity to play at Chuckchansi Park! Details will come as we know specifics.

This year CJSL is trying a new playing format based on a system of promotion/relegation. The "Seeding Tournament" where four games were played on the first weekend has been put aside. U10's and 12's will play the first four weeks of the season as a seeding process starting on 9/18, and then will be moved to their final brackets for league play. U8's will play the first five weeks of the season before teams are moved to their final brackets. This is being done both to alleviate the stress of opening weekend on families and players, and to more accurately gauge teams ability before moving them. The season will end 11/20.

Open Registration and Online for Freedom Soccer Closed on July 31st for all programs except Under6 which closed 8/31.

If you missed Open Registration, your child may still be able to participate, based on space availability, which is still available for some age groups, but filling up. Our goal is to find a place for all interested players to participate so we'll do everything we can to make it happen.

Print and Complete the Manual Registration form. Disregard the friends/coach request line as we are unable to consider these. Please do include on this line your child's Uniform Shirt & Short size, and Hoodie Sweatshirt size. Also include your assessment (A, B, C, +/-) of your child's soccer skill level.

Registration forms plus $115 check for registration fees for U12, U10 and U8 players and $85 for U6, and copy of birth certificate can be turned in at the registrar's residence. (There's a bin on the porch checked regularly or you can knock.) Players will be placed on the "wait list" in the order registration forms are received by the registrar. Every effort will be made to include your child on a team as space permits. If space is not available at Freedom, we'll check for availability at nearby schools or your registration will be returned.

Under 6 teams are in formation process- U6 registration is still open so we've held off on forming teams until we have a better idea of how many teams we need to form. These should be forthcoming the end of first week of school and for those just registering, the following week.

All other teams have been submitted to coaches- and the coaches will be calling or emailing to schedule practices. A few coaches are still on summer vacation. If you have not yet heard from your coach, they may be sitting on a beach or campfire enjoying the last week of summer vacation.

Please offer a HUGE THANK YOU to your coaches... they and the board members who make this happen are all volunteers, giving of their time and talents to put all of this together. We currently have more than 50 volunteer coaches and assistants, and about 250 registered players on 25 teams. Without these volunteers, Freedom Soccer Club would not exist.

Soccer Gear and Soccer Balls

We've been getting lots of questions about soccer gear and balls.

Players should have soccer cleats that looser rather than tighter as their feet can swell while playing, and gives them room to grow during the next three months.

I have several pairs of cleats available for exchange free of charge at 2633 Applegate in Clovis 96611. Bring your old cleats and swap for a larger size if available. These will be on my porch between now and Jamboree. Come any time daylight to 10pm or so, the porch light should be on. You can also just drop off your old cleats to add to the supply if you have them.

Soccer Balls should be brought to each practice (and Jamboree.)

U6 and U8 players use a SIZE #3 soccer ball.
U10 and U12 players use a SIZE #4 soccer ball.

Pro Soccer at the SW corner of Herndon and Willow has a good selection and I have found the owner/operator to be very helpful in making appropriate selections for my kids. They have good prices and may have a special package for cleats/shin guards/and a ball for Freedom Players for $39.99.

Gear is also available at Big 5, Walmart, Target, and Second String Sports as well as many other outlets.

Let's Play Spring Ball!

Dear Coaches & Players,
CJSL has announced Spring Soccer. If you are interested in having your player or team return to play for the Spring season they are eligible except the U6 teams. Freedom Soccer has not participated in the past, so the board does not have a game plan in place as we do for Fall Soccer. This will be largely Coach-Driven program, but Club Supplies and uniforms are available. Following is the information we have received from CJSL:

Once again it is time for Spring Soccer. Spring league will begin this year with the intent of fulfilling two purposes: From the recreational (Class 4) side; the intent for spring league is to provide a place for players to continue growing their 'love for the game'. The environment is low pressure and lots of fun. For the more competitive (Class 1 and 3) side; the intent of Spring League is for evaluation and confidence building. Spring League will give coaches the ability to reassess their team's abilities for future placement for fall season. For either case; (competitive or recreational) Spring League is an upstart program to support the continuing development of youth soccer and soccer throughout the District. Participation is for all CYSA eligible players between the ages of 6-16 years old. Also, this is both boys and girls. Finally, this is for teams as well as individual's. Our purpose is to find a anyone who wants to continue to play.

Team Fees and Registration:
U8's: $300 per team
U10's: $325 per team
U12's: $350 per team
U14's: $350 per team
*** The fees should be submitted to their 'home club' so a club check can be processed for payment. The club check will be sent to their 'Home League'. The league will draw a final registration check for all teams participating in Spring League. League checks for Spring League will be made payable to 'District 7'. PLEASE NO PERSONAL CHECKS. THEY WILL BE RETURNED TO THE SENDER. * These fees are team-based fees on returning players from the fall 2008 session. If a player was not registered for the Fall session; then there will be an individual cost for the player to be eligible for Spring League. Coaches/Team Parents will have uniform shirts tonight- and should be contacting players to let them know the meeting time/plan for their teams tomorrow. It may be easiest to meet a little early and distribute the shirts at the game site, but this will be up to each team.

Freedom Soccer Club Recreational League Soccer Registration Update

Currently Accepting Wait List Registrations ages U8 to U12
Open Registration (guaranteed on a team) closed on July 31 for U8 to U12 teams.
We are currently placing players filling remaining slots based on first-come first served on existing teams.

Coaches have their rosters and practices are beginning this and next week.

Players can continue to register manually; drop forms and payment at 2633 Applegate in Clovis pay in full. Every effort will be made to include your child, but if we can not find a space for them, their registration fees will be refunded. There is no guarantee they will be placed on a team. $115 per player.

Practices are beginning.
Registration Includes a Soccer Ball appropriately sized by age group.
Games will begin mid-September 2009
Games will end the week before Thanksgiving.

(U6 players season is typically 2 weeks shorter)

U6 Registration Still Open. $90 per player. Print 2 copies of registration form and bring with payment to 2633 Applegate. (There is a "soccer" bin on the porch.)

If you missed Open Registration:

Paper Registration print and sign 2 copies and turn in to 2633 Applegate Ave with payment. (Checks payable to Freedom Soccer Club) Every effort will be made to include players, but will be limited to space availability on teams.

2009 Freedom Soccer Teams will be formed by SKILL ASSESSMENT to ensure a fun recreational playing season for all players. Friend/Team requests are not being considered.

Freedom Soccer Club (FSC) is affiliated with Clovis Junior Soccer League (CJSL). Once FSC forms teams they are submitted to CJSL who creates schedules. Visit CJSL and sign up for their newsletter to get the most up-to-date schedule and related league information.
